A doctor abandoned a patient under anesthesia on the operating table and went to another room to engage in sexual activity with a nurse.

According to the BBC, 44-year-old Dr. Sohail Anjum and an unnamed nurse were caught in a “shameful situation” at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester by a colleague.

The incident, which took place in September 2023, only came to light when Dr. Anjum—who had been living in Pakistan—applied to return to medical practice in the UK.

During a hearing in Manchester, he did not contest the evidence presented by the General Medical Council (GMC) and admitted that his behavior was “disgraceful.”

The consultant anesthetist had told colleagues he needed “a break to rest” and asked another nurse to watch over a male patient during surgery. He disappeared for about eight minutes before returning to complete the procedure.

Instead of resting, Dr. Anjum went to another operating theatre at Ashton-under-Lyne hospital, where he had a sexual encounter with a woman referred to as “Nurse C” in the proceedings.

Before the GMC tribunal began, Dr. Anjum admitted he did not dispute the facts of the case and acknowledged being involved in sexual activity with Nurse C. He also confessed that he knew she “might be nearby” when he left his patient and accepted that his actions carried the potential to put the patient at risk.
